DUNDEE UNITED - SCOTTISH CUP WINNERS 1994
Dundee United had never won the Scottish Cup, having reached six finals. United had, in fact, reached four finals in the previous decade.
Their opponents Rangers were heavy favourites. They were looking to win back-to-back trebles and recently won the league title.
However, on that Saturday, 21st May afternoon, Craig Brewster scored the only goal of the game for a famous win.
Whatever happened to that winning squad?
1️⃣ GUIDO VAN DE KAMP
The Scottish Cup Final was Van de Kamp’s last game for Dundee United following a contract dispute. He briefly returned to the Netherlands before resuming his career in Scotland. He joined Dunfermline Athletic, where he enjoyed success and collected a Scottish First Division winners’ medal, and later went on to play for Raith Rovers and Alloa Athletic.
Towards the end of the 1996–97 season, he had a short loan spell with Glentoran in Northern Ireland, rejecting a permanent move after initially considering retirement. Instead, he signed for Raith Rovers after being persuaded by manager Jimmy Nicholl, extending his professional career in Scottish football.
2️⃣ ALEC CLELAND
After leaving United, Cleland signed for Rangers in 1995, becoming a regular at right-back and making over 100 appearances before moving to Everton in 1998 with Walter Smith. His time in England was hampered by injuries, leading to his retirement in 2002.
Cleland then moved into coaching, beginning as assistant at East Stirlingshire before spells at Partick Thistle and Livingston, where he twice served as caretaker manager. He later worked in youth development at Rangers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle before joining St Johnstone, where he spent over a decade in various coaching roles, including multiple stints as caretaker manager and a period as assistant manager. He is now back at Dundee United as Head of Academy.
